Fall is one of the most exciting seasons in the classroom! Leaves are changing, pumpkins are everywhere, and students can’t wait to dive into seasonal fun. But as teachers, we also know how important it is to keep learning front and center while still embracing the magic of autumn. That’s why I’ve rounded up some engaging fall activities for the primary classroom that strengthen early literacy, math, and fine motor skills, all while celebrating the season.

Fall-Themed Read Alouds to Kick Off the Season
One of the easiest ways to get students excited about fall is through read-alouds. Picture books bring the season to life while encouraging discussion, vocabulary growth, and a love of reading. With that being said, before we dive into some activities, here are a few of my personal favorites!
Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert: This is a beautifully illustrated story that follows a man made of leaves as he drifts through different landscapes. Students can talk about colors, shapes, and movement, or even create their own leaf art inspired by the book. This is especially fun if you gather up some leaves together out on the playground first!
The Scarecrow by Beth Ferry: This charming tale highlights kindness and community, all set against a fall backdrop. It’s perfect for sparking conversations about teamwork, empathy, and seasonal changes. If you’ve never read this one before, trust me – it’s a must and so, so sweet!
Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson: Fletcher is a curious little fox and discovers the beauty of autumn as the leaves change colors and start to fall. This story encourages kids to notice seasonal changes in nature while also exploring themes of curiosity, observation, and patience. Students can pair the read-aloud with leaf sorting activities or nature walks to connect the story to real-world learning.
Adding these books to your fall lesson plans is a simple, low-prep way to engage students from day one. After reading, you can connect them to hands-on activities, writing prompts, or crafts that extend the learning in a fun, seasonal way. Speaking of which, here are some of my favorites!

Pairing them with writing prompts makes this resource an engaging way to practice both handwriting and creative expression. These Fall Draw and Write Pages include 15 pages in 4 different page options to fit a variety of skill levels. There are both print and cursive options included, so they’re great for kindergarten through second grade!
Whether students are drawing a scarecrow or a pumpkin patch, they’ll have a meaningful writing connection to go along with their art, making it a great literacy and creativity combo. This fall set includes 8 editable coloring pages with the following hidden pictures:

They’re the perfect quiet, but purposeful activity for centers, early finishers, or even a calming transition between lessons. As a bonus, they build focus and attention to detail while still feeling more like play than schoolwork!
Bonus Fall Activities for the Primary Classroom
Want to sprinkle even more fall spirit into your classroom? Here are a few extra activities you can do with little to no prep:

- Leaf Collection + Sorting: Take students on a mini outdoor adventure (even just around the playground!) to collect leaves, then sort by size, shape, or color.
- Classroom Pumpkin: Consider sprouting your own pumpkin seeds and letting them grow into a real pumpkin! Your climate will depend on whether or not this is possible in the fall, but it’s a lot of fun to try. Read this post to see how we did this in my classroom.
- Scarecrow or Pumpkin Day: Choose one day to do all your lessons with a seasonal twist. Think pumpkin math, scarecrow crafts, and themed read-alouds with a fall theme!
