Each quarter, like clockwork, I reach a point where I become nervous about whether we are going to fit everything in or not. We do, thankfully, but one way I can fit it all in is due to cross-curricular teaching. One standout advantage of it is its efficiency in covering a range of materials within a certain timeframe. Cross-Curricular Teaching Examples

Rocks Cross-Curricular Unit

In this Rock Cross-Curricular Unit, your students use their skills of observing, identifying, and describing properties all related to rocks. Your students have the chance to read readers to gather information on rocks. The readers include sight words while your students are working on their reading fluency skills. After reading, I pull out the vocabulary words that were first seen by the readers. I have a version that I put up on our word wall. I then have my students practice their opposites by matching pictures to words from the story.

For the next activity, my students have a blast selecting a rock they want to observe. We go on a nature walk to find their rocks, or they can bring one from home! The focus here is on the skill of careful observation and identifying the physical properties that make each rock unique. If you wanted to, you could allow your students to have more than one rock. Once the observations are written on the observation sheet, the real magic happens. My students take the details they observed and recorded, and begin to write a descriptive writing piece that brings their rock to life. This activity promises not only a closer look at rocks but also a journey into the art of descriptive writing, making each observation a narrative adventure.

When it comes to math, there are multiple activities that my students always enjoy! There’s a rock sorting activity where you gather all of the rocks from your students. They will identify the physical properties of the rocks by sorting them based on the labels set out. Labels include size, texture, and shape. Another example of a math activity involves a balance to weigh rocks. I always review how to use one before setting them loose!

Pumpkins Cross-Curricular Unit

Another popular unit is my Pumpkin Cross-Curricular Unit. Many of the activities that are included are similar to the rock unit but with a pumpkin theme. Your students will dive into the topic of pumpkins with the included science reader and vocabulary cards. With their newfound knowledge they will head out to interact with language, science, writing, and math in multiple ways. There’s a little something for everyone!

Your students will be able to practice their opposites by matching a picture of a pumpkin to the correct word. Then, they’ll continue practicing their writing by bringing in a pumpkin from home or possibly a provided pumpkin. They’ll write down their observations of their pumpkin’s physical properties. Once they have their observations safely recorded, they’ll have a chance to write a descriptive writing piece.

There is a small experiment to determine whether the pumpkin will sink or float. Let me tell you, your students are going to have a mind-blowing moment! They will first make a prediction about what they think will happen and explain why. Then they watch as I place a pumpkin in a tub of water. The gasps and sounds of shock are very real. Don’t miss this chance to talk about what happened and why it happened. {Hint: the pumpkin is hollow in the middle and has lots of air inside which makes it quite buoyant.} Once the experiment is complete, they write and illustrate what happened.

From the math perspective, your students will have a chance to sort different pumpkins based on their properties of size, texture, shape, and color. This is a great way for them to learn and practice using new vocabulary words. They’ll practice their graphing skills by recording data for the number of different sizes of pumpkins.

At the very end, your students will have a chance to complete a couple of different writing pieces. One of my favorites is My Pumpkin Book, where your students get the chance to describe what pumpkins are, can do, and what they need!
