Coming back to school after Labor Day always feels like we’ve turned a corner. The weather starts to share hints of cool, fall air, Starbucks has released its Fall Menu, and my students begin to look forward to the fall and Halloween themes they know our classroom will soon have. As a teacher, fall holds a special place in my classroom. There’s nothing I love more than leaning into my students’ excitement for the fall season. And of course, this excitement involves books! Today I’m sharing 10 fantastic fall picture books and activities that will embrace the season’s excitement, no matter what grade level you’re teaching!

1. Fall Weather: Cooler Temperatures by Martha E. H. Rustad
Why not kick off this list with a book that’s perfect for describing the changes that come with the fall?! This kid-friendly, informational text introduces young learners to the changes in weather, clothing, and activities that come with fall. It’s perfect for building background knowledge about the season.
Follow-Up Activity: Fall Anchor Chart
After reading, work with your students to build an anchor chart filled with words and phrases that describe fall. Include categories like weather, clothes, foods, holidays, and activities. This is a simple way to boost vocabulary and expand on the book. Plus, you’ll be able to leave your anchor chart up for display all season long to inspire descriptive writing.
2. Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson
In this sweet story, Fletcher the fox worries when the leaves start falling from his favorite tree, but soon discovers the beauty in change. It’s a tender way to introduce the idea of seasons and the cycle of nature.
Follow-Up Activity: Fall Mystery Pictures
After reading, let students practice math or phonics skills while celebrating the season with Fall Mystery Pictures. This resource is fully editable, meaning you can fill the pages with any skill you’d like to focus on. Math facts, sight words, CVC words, letters, you name it! This silly, engaging story follows Squirrel as he tries to solve the mystery of his missing leaves. It’s a lighthearted way to explore fall changes with lots of laughs.
