I love how books can be a gateway to so many learning opportunities! As a teacher, one of the core beliefs that shape my educational foundation is that people of all ages, especially children, learn best when learning feels natural and arises in the flow of everyday life. That’s why I’m always looking for ways to give my students real-life experiences right in the classroom. I’ve found that connecting multiple subjects or concepts to one key experience is a great way to do this. Many times, books about science provide the perfect jumping-off point. A read-aloud allows the entire class to begin from the same place, making it easier to explore new ideas together. Today, I’m sharing my favorite books about science that you can start using in your own classroom! 

Picture Books About Science

This is such an engaging book that explores the different types of rocks you might find while out in nature. It’s perfect for introducing your kiddos to geology in a way that feels personal and adventurous. I love how this book encourages students to think about the roles rocks play, whether they’re skipping stones or building cairns. It’s a great read-aloud for getting them excited about rocks and the natural world. It’s one of my favorite books about science for younger learners and pairs very well with my cross-curricular Rock unit! 

The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield

Written by real-life astronaut Chris Hadfield, this book is an amazing introduction to space exploration. The story follows a young boy who dreams of becoming an astronaut but is afraid of the dark. It’s such an inspiring read that blends overcoming fears with the wonders of space. This is one of those books about science that’s perfect for sparking curiosity about space while also being relatable for students who might be dealing with their own fears.

Over and Under the Pond by Kate Messner 

I just love how this book takes kiddos on a journey through the ecosystems both above and below the surface of a pond. It’s filled with beautiful illustrations and simple, yet engaging facts about the plants and animals that live in and around ponds. This is one of my go-to books about science for introducing students to ecosystems and habitats in a way that’s both informative and calming.

The Water Princess by Susan Verde

This book is based on the real-life experiences of model Georgie Badiel. It brings awareness to the global water crisis. It follows a young girl in Africa who dreams of bringing clean water to her village. It’s such a powerful read-aloud that combines science concepts about water and its importance with an important message of hope and change. I love using this book to tie science into social awareness, making it a perfect addition to my books about science list.

The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires

This is such a fun and inspiring book about creativity and engineering. It follows a young girl who sets out to build the most magnificent thing but faces some challenges along the way. I love how it introduces kids to concepts like perseverance and problem-solving, all while encouraging them to think like engineers. This is one of those books about science that also touches on the creative process. This makes it a great choice for sparking both curiosity and imagination in students.

Early Chapter Books About Science

When it comes to transitioning students from picture books to something with a bit more depth, early chapter books are the perfect next step. These books about science are great for younger readers who are ready for a bit more story but still want plenty of fun and adventure. I’ve pulled together some of my favorite early chapter books that make science not just accessible, but really exciting for kids. 

The Pumpkin Book by Gail Gibbons

If you’re looking for a perfect pumpkin-themed read, this one has you covered! It’s packed with fun facts about pumpkins, from how they grow to their role in our favorite fall traditions like Halloween and Thanksgiving. As an early chapter book, it’s ideal for introducing plant life cycles simply and engagingly. This is one of my go-to books about science when discussing plants or doing fun fall activities with pumpkins! In fact, this book would be a great addition to my cross-curricular Pumpkin Unit!

The Magic Schoolbus: The Truth About Bats by Eva Moore

You can’t go wrong with The Magic School Bus series. This one is a favorite for learning about bats. Ms. Frizzle and her class go on another wild field trip to uncover fascinating facts about these creatures. It’s such a fun, easy-to-follow early chapter book that helps your students dive into the animal world. It truly is a great pick for books about science that are both exciting and educational.

Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows by Asia Citro

This book is a fantastic way to combine science with imagination! Zoey and her adorable cat, Sassafras, help magical animals by using real science. Students love how Zoey tackles each challenge like a true scientist, making predictions and experimenting. It’s one of those early books about science that blends adventure with problem-solving in a way that’s super relatable for younger readers.

The Curious Garden by Peter Brown

Ghost in the Water by Sue Garcia

Ghost in the Water, written by Sue Garcia, is the first book in the League of Scientists Mystery series. It’s such a fantastic way to get our students excited about science and problem-solving! This book introduces us to middle school students who have formed the League of Scientists. Together, they use their knowledge of science, technology, math, and logic to solve mysteries. Not in a textbook or science class kind of way, but in a super engaging and adventurous way. Students will connect with the challenges the characters face as they band together to save the school swimming pool. It’s a great read that blends mystery and science perfectly.

Leonardo Da Vince Gets a Do-Over by Mark P Friedlander

Leonardo da Vinci Gets a Do-Over, written by Mark Friedlander, Jr., is the first book in the Innovators in Action series. It’s such a fun ride! The story takes three American middle school students on a class trip to Florence, Italy, where they unexpectedly meet Leonardo da Vinci himself. And the twist? He’s back in modern times with a mission to make the world a better place! I love how this book mixes history with adventure as the students help this Renaissance legend navigate the 21st century. It’s a great way to bring history to life and keep kids engaged with a blend of humor, excitement, and a bit of time-travel fun!

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown

This book is a fantastic mix of adventure and technology, making it one of my favorite books about science to read aloud. It follows a robot named Roz, who ends up on a remote island. She has to figure out how to survive by learning from the natural world around her. Through Roz’s journey, readers explore scientific concepts like ecosystems and adaptation, all while being drawn into the captivating story. It’s a perfect way to engage students in learning about science and the environment in a way that feels natural and exciting.

Frank Einstein and the Antimatter Motor by Jon Scieszka

This one is a must for any upper elementary classroom looking for books about science that mix humor with learning! Frank Einstein is a young inventor who creates an antimatter-powered machine. Soon after, things go hilariously wrong. Alongside the fun, this book introduces readers to real scientific concepts like energy and matter in a way that feels like play rather than work. It’s such a fun, interactive read-aloud that excites students about science without realizing they’re learning.

The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm
