Happy 4th of July! I love this holiday and the time we have to reflect on our country. I don’t always agree with the politics but I do know that we are very lucky and blessed and that we live in an amazing country. I don’t know about your school calendar but I love that we have so many opportunities to either be in school or teach around patriotic holidays. I just wanted to share a few things we did this last year.
Veteran’s Day is an amazing holiday and we are in school that day. I LOVE that our school uses our main hall to create a Hall of Honor. The staff and students are give the opportunity to create a little card about a relative that is a veteran. All the cards are hung up and displayed. This year we added our own little artwork and writing to the Hall of Honor – life size soldiers!
The kids loved this activity and did such an amazing job thanking a soldier for their service. When we were all done we boxed them up and sent them to deployed soldiers. I sure wish I was a fly on the wall when they opened their letters and found little mini-me’s! Here’s a couple more pics of our Veteran’s Day project:
This is a definite do again project. If you try it – just give yourself plenty of time. Coloring the entire body camo takes a while! We broke this project up into several days and the kids loved it!!
Most of all, I love that I can teach the kids that there is more to these holidays than a day off school or a BBQ. I love that I can share my love for this country. I love that I can help instill some patriotism in their lives.
